Round Valley Reservoir 2017

Our overnight hike/introduction to backpacking was a success! The three scouts who went on the Round Valley Reservoir overnight hike in 2016 enjoyed it so much that they added it to the 2017 calendar. This time we had 11 scouts attend. While a little challenging for some, the 3-mile hike to the campsite proved to be a great experience for the scouts overall. They got a taste of backpacking and what it’s like to pack light and carry everything over a distance to the campsite. The weather was a little cold, and luckily we missed the heavy rainstorm Friday night. I gave the scouts a demo on the PCT Method of hanging a bear bag. A few things we had to deal with were sleeping bags with wrong temperature ratings, muddy clothes, excess food, and small tents that didn’t stay up well. In the end, there were a lot of lessons learned and experience gained. They all agreed that it was a great trip, but they would like to plan the next overnight hike in warmer weather. I’m going to challenge them to raise the mileage a bit. The next level hike for the backpacking merit badge is a total of 15 miles with essentially the same amount of gear… easy-peasy. 🙂

Troop 23 In The News

Mark Groendyk, left with his brother Stephen

Troop 23 was mentioned in the Essex News Daily, regarding our recent Pancake Breakfast fundraiser for the Mark Groendyk Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Mark earned his Eagle Scout in our troop a number of years ago, and after studying at Wentworth Institute of Technology, he went on to become an engineer for Earthship Biotecture, constructing sustainable facilities. Unfortunately, he was killed this last summer while trying to do a good turn.
